Toddler Friendly Snack Ideas!

Hello loves! It’s so nice to see you here again. I know times are a little crazy right now, and I know a lot of us are struggling to stay occupied during this social-distancing period.

In case you are looking for a fun activity to do with your kiddos here is a “cooking” activity that might be fun to try! Some of you might already do a cooking activity with your kiddos but if you don’t, here are a few toddler-friendly snack ideas to try out!

Here at our house, I love doing cooking activities with my daughter. During my time working at Head Start as a teacher assistant, I learned that “cooking” with young children is a great way to introduce new opportunities for children to learn and explore as well as teach them about nutrition. Not only is it super important for their overall development but it’s super easy and fun too! Which is why Scarlett and I enjoy it so much.

Implementing a cooking activity into your day to day is simple. Because obviously, when you’re home with your kid all day you have to feed them right? So why not have them help you in the process? This way, they stay occupied, they get fed and learn something new all at once!

(It’s also a great way to add in sensory play into their day too!)

Some of my favorite snacks to make with Scarlett are listed below. Not only are they super easy but they don’t take a lot of time and don’t require a lot of ingredients either! I hope you enjoy & if you decide to try any let me know!

Peanut Butter Energy Balls:

Ingredients: 2/3 cups Peanut Butter, 1/2 chocolate chips (or you can use raisins too!), 2 tablespoons honey, 1 cup of oats (old fashioned)

  • Mix all ingredients together until everything is well combined.
  • Form into little balls and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let them sit in the refrigerator for about 20-30min.
  • Enjoy!

Peanut Butter Cereal Bites:

Ingredients: 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1/2 cup of honey, 4 cups plain cheerios, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  •  Add the honey and peanut butter to a large, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Remove and stir until well combined.
  • Return the bowl to the microwave for another 30 to 45 seconds. Remove and add the vanilla extract and again, stir well.
  • Add the Cheerios and stir until the cereal is well coated.
  • Drop portions onto a parchment-lined baking sheet (or into cupcake liners). Allow them to set. They should harden up enough to pick them up within half an hour, but it takes a few hours for them to be more firm.
  • Enjoy!

Trail Mix:

Ingredients: 1 cup plain cheerios, 1 cup chocolate chips (or M&M’s),  1 box of raisins, 1 cup mixed nuts, 1 cup goldfish

  • Mix all ingredients together & enjoy!!

**Note feel free to leave out the nuts if you or your children have a peanut allergy**

PB& J Sushi Rolls:

Ingredient: 1 tablespoon Peanut Butter, 1 tablespoon Jelly (use any flavor of your choice!), 2 slices of bread (Whole Wheat is a healthier option but use what you have on hand & what your kid likes.)

  • Cut crusts off each slice of bread
  • Coat each slice of bread with 1/2 the peanut butter and 1/2 the jelly
  • Roll each slice of bread and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Enjoy!

Strawberry Waffle Nutella Sandwiches:

Ingredient: 2 Strawberry Waffles (brand of your choice), 1/2 tablespoon Nutella, 1/2 Banana Chopped (*optional)

  • Toast Waffles in the Toaster
  • Spread Nutella on both waffles
  • top one waffle with banana slices & then place the other waffle on top (Nutella side down)
  • Cut in two & Enjoy!

Easy as that!! All of the recipes are super simple, fast, and great on-the-go snacks and the ingredients are easily interchangeable too! I hope you all enjoyed this post. Hopefully, it gave you some inspiration on snack ideas and ways to have your toddler help you in the kitchen! Remember that as you are adding each ingredient to talk with your toddler and give them good nutritional information about each ingredient as you add it in. It’s a great way to help build vocabulary as well!

Let me know how these came out for you all & enjoy!

Stay safe, practice good hygiene, and have a blessed and beautiful day!
